Side Pricing #
Side Pricing allows you to charge customers based on the product sides they customize.
Instead of applying a single flat customization fee, you can assign different prices to number of sides. This approach reflects actual production costs and gives you greater flexibility when pricing customizable products.
Side Pricing is commonly used for apparel, mugs, business cards, packaging, and any product with multiple printable surfaces.
How Side Pricing Works #
Each printable side is associated with a Design Area and a Printing Type.
When a customer adds artwork to a side, Product Designer App checks the assigned Printing Type and applies the corresponding pricing rule.
The workflow is:
Customer Starts Designing
↓
Customer Adds Artwork
↓
Printable Side Detected
↓
Side Pricing Rule Applied
↓
Customization Price Updated

Cart & Checkout
Only sides that contain customer artwork are included in the pricing calculation.
Before You Begin #
Before configuring Side Pricing, make sure you have:
- Created a Product Base
- Configured all required Views
- Created Design Areas for each printable side
- Created a Printing Type
- Assigned the Printing Type to the Product Base
- Tested the product in the Design Studio
Each printable side should correspond to a View and Design Area.
Example:
| View | Design Area | Side |
|---|---|---|
| Front | Front Print | 1 Side |
| Back | Back Print | 2 Sides |
| Left Sleeve | Sleeve Logo | 3 Sides |
Keeping the same naming convention throughout the configuration makes pricing easier to maintain.
When to Use Side Pricing #
Side Pricing is recommended whenever different printable surfaces have different production costs.
Typical examples include:
- Front and back T-shirts
- Hoodies with sleeve printing
- Mugs with front and back printing
- Double-sided business cards
- Packaging boxes
- Phone cases with optional side printing
If every product always uses a single printable area, a fixed printing price may be sufficient.
Configure Side Pricing #
Step 1. Open Printing Types #
Navigate to:
Product Designer App → Printings
Create a new Printing Type or edit an existing one.
The Printing Type contains the pricing table for every printable side.
Step 2. Configure the Number of Printable Sides #
Specify how many printable sides the product supports.
Examples:
Business Card
2 Sides
Front
Back
T-Shirt
2 Sides
Front
Back
Hoodie
4 Sides
Front
Back
Left Sleeve
Right Sleeve
Only configure the sides that customers are allowed to customize.
Step 3. Assign Prices #
Enter a price for each printable side.
Example:
| Side | Price |
| 1 side | $3.00 |
| 2 sides | $5.00 |
| 3 sides | $7.00 |
| 4 sides | $8.00 |
When customers customize multiple sides, Product Designer App calculates the total according to your pricing configuration.
Combined Side Pricing #
Instead of simply adding individual side prices together, you can offer discounted pricing for common side combinations.
Example:
| Customized Sides | Price |
| 1 side (Front or Back) | $5 |
| 2 sides (Front + Back) | $8 |
Without a combined rule:
2 sides (Front) $5 + (Back) $5 = $10
With a combined rule:
2 sides (Front + Back = $8
This approach is commonly used for promotional pricing.
Example Configurations #
Front or Back #
Front
$5
Customer customizes only the front or back.
Final customization price:
$5
Front and Back #
$8
Hoodie
| Side | Price |
| 1 side | $3 |
| 2 sides | $5 |
| 3 sides | $7 |
| 4 sides | $8 |
Customer customizes:
- Front
- Left Sleeve
Final customization price:
$5
Side Pricing and Design Areas #
Each printable side should contain its own Design Area.
Example:
Front View
└── Front Print
Back View
└── Back Print
Left Sleeve View
└── Left Sleeve Logo
If a Design Area does not exist, customers cannot design that side.
Side Pricing and Printing Types #
Side Pricing is configured inside a Printing Type.
The Printing Type determines:
- Available printable sides
- Side combinations
- Pricing rules
- Quantity discounts
- Other pricing attributes
A Product Base may reuse the same Printing Type across multiple products.
Side Pricing with Quantity Discounts #
Side Pricing can be combined with quantity pricing.
Example:
| Quantity | 1 side | 2 sides |
| 1–9 | $5 | $8 |
| 10–49 | $4.50 | $7 |
| 50+ | $4 | $6 |
This allows wholesale customers to receive lower printing costs.
Side Pricing with Product Colors #
Normally, product color does not affect Side Pricing.
However, some production methods charge differently depending on garment color.
Example:
| Color | 1 Side Print |
| White | $5 |
| Black | $6 |
Use additional pricing rules if your production workflow requires color-based pricing.
Best Practices #
For reliable pricing:
- Match side names with product Views.
- Use descriptive side names.
- Configure only printable sides.
- Create combined pricing for common combinations.
- Test every side individually.
- Test every side combination.
- Test quantity discounts.

Test Side Pricing #
Before publishing the product:
Test Individual Sides #
Customize only:
- Front

- Left Sleeve
- Right Sleeve
Verify the correct price for each side.
Test Combined Sides #
Test combinations such as:
- Front + Back
- Front + Sleeve
- Back + Sleeve
Confirm the expected pricing is applied.
Test Quantity Pricing #
Verify quantities:
- 1
- 10
- 50
- 100
Ensure the correct pricing tier is selected.
Test Cart and Checkout #
Verify that:
- Design Studio price
- Cart subtotal
- Checkout total
- WooCommerce order
all display the same customization price.
Common Issues #
Side Price Is Not Added #
Check that:
- The Printing Type is assigned.
- The side exists.
- The Design Area contains artwork.
- The pricing table contains a value.
Wrong Side Is Charged #
Verify that:
- View names match side names.
- The customer added artwork to the intended side.
- The correct Printing Type is assigned.
Combined Pricing Does Not Apply #
Check that:
- The combined pricing rule exists.
- The selected side combination matches the configured rule.
- No conflicting pricing rule overrides it.
Customer Is Charged Twice #
Review:
- WooCommerce product options
- Printing Type pricing
- Side Pricing rules
The same surcharge should not be configured in multiple places unless intentionally combined.
